Medical Student Session: Learning from Sepsis Survivors
March 9, 2020, 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
On Monday, March 9, 2020 from 11 to 11:50 am, sepsis survivors will be speaking in a lecture hall at Vancouver General Hospital with ~200 medical students across Vancouver, Kelowna, and Prince George as part of their MEDD422 course on the transition from classroom to clinical education. By sharing their journey, our patient partners will be providing future dotors with insights into the clinical, mental, and emotional impacts of sepsis, and helping improve quality of care for future patients suffering from sepsis. In particular, this session will focus on;
- Diagnosis: What were the warning signs you experienced before being admitted to the hospital?
- In-hospital: Can you describe the progression of symptoms you experienced after being admitted to the hospital? What types of care were provided? What was done well or poorly by the medical team?
- Post-discharge: How did rehabilitation play a role in managing your care after discharge from the hospital? Did you experience “post-sepsis syndrome”, and if so, what have been its effects on your physical and mental well-being? What are your views of your present and future life as someone who survived sepsis?
- Advocacy: What do you think are the current issues regarding sepsis awareness, treatment, and follow-up care?
