For every case of maternal death, many more women experience life-threatening complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Maternal sepsis is just one condition A considerable proportion of individuals suffer a severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and are readmitted after delivery discharge in Canada. However, further research is required to elucidate the exact burden of morbidity in the postpartum period in British Columbia (BC). This study aims to:
- Assess the cumulative incidence of hospital readmissions and SMM events occurring after delivery discharge within the first six weeks (42 days) of childbirth
- Identify maternal characteristics and pregnancy-related factors most associated with postpartum readmissions and SMM events in BC
- Examine timing of hospital readmission and SMM events after delivery discharge
