Ongoing provincial implementation and evaluation project for pediatric sepsis screening across all health authorities. Collaborative development of provincial severe sepsis screening and management guidelines were developed and tools for screening in various stages of implementation. Planned implementation evaluation and outcomes evaluations.
This includes a QI Project led by a Pediatric Resident (Taniele Johnson) with mixed methods environmental scan of BC Children's Hospital Emergency Department's current sepsis screening practice and knowledge, chart review of sepsis cases, and ED screening with identification of barriers and opportunities. The results of this project informed development of Child Health BC's Pediatric Sepsis Toolkit, which can be found on their website: https://www.childhealthbc.ca/clinician-resources/pediatric-sepsis-0.
Provincial pediatric sepsis screening and management tools are being implemented at two early adopter sites in Northern Health (UHNBC) and Interior Health (East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Cranbrook). Cranbrook site went live in April 2021, UHNBC to shortly follow suit. Implementation is being evaluated with health care provider interviews and medical record reviews. The project is expected to take 6-9 months and then scale-up to other sites in Northern Health and Interior Health will be planned.
